MDA’s RADARSAT-2 satellite will help guide the Catlin Arctic Survey expedition led by British explorer Ann Daniels and an international team of research scientists on a 500 kilometre trek across the floating sea ice of the Arctic Ocean. The expedition, which set out on March 15, 2010, will investigate the potential effects of carbon dioxide on the Arctic Ocean. This is the second Catlin expedition that MDA has supported.

MDA has delivered several RADARSAT-2 images to the expedition prior to the team being dropped off on the ice. The satellite images came in handy early on in the expedition by helping the explorers gauge weather patterns to determine the best time for drop-off as they faced severe bad weather that delayed the original planned drop-off.

Following a seven-hour flight from Resolute in Northern Canada, the team’s Twin Otter plane successfully landed on a refrozen lead of water late on Sunday March 14th, at 85°32’N, 77°45’W. The team of three, including Martin Hartley and Charlie Paton, will be hauling sledges weighing up to 120 kilos over pressure ridges, rubble fields and swimming across leads of open water.

From its vantage point 798 kilometres above the earth, RADARSAT-2 data is charting the way for the three British polar explorers through this challenging and unforgiving terrain. RADARSAT-2 imagery will assist the team in identifying potential hazards and obstacles as they trek over the ice in addition to locating safe sites that will allow aircraft to deliver vital supplies to them. RADARSAT 2 will provide nearly real-time operational information that will give them the bigger picture of ice conditions in the hours and days ahead.
