- HH is preferable to VV due to the greater penetration into the vegetation cover
- Expected improvement in mapping of surficial deposits and rock units in vegetated terrain based on the polarimetric response
- More accurate knowledge of snow pack composition such as snow-water equivalent and snow extent
- Both are suitable for detecting wetlands. Studies suggest:
- Effective in dense marsh communities
- Viable for non-woody wetlands and herbaceous wetlands
- VV better than HH for low density marsh lands
- HH better than VV for flooded forest
- Improved discrimination of wetland classes
- Expected to enhance shoreline mapping by increasing contrast between land and water
- Provides additional information to enhance coastal zone mapping (tidal and near shore mapping) through the increased sensitivity to structural differences in targets observed
